INVINCIBLE (also known as Untitled Vince Papale Project)

From the producers of Disney's acclaimed recent real life sports dramas Miracle and The Rookie comes another entry to this class that's especially in the mold of the latter. To spice things up for his organization, Philadelphia Eagles coach thingy Vermeil decided to invite fans to compete for a spot on the pro football team's roster. Vince Papale, a 30-year-old bartender who had recently lost his wife and his teaching job, gave it a shot and against the odds, wound up on the team. Mark Wahlberg plays Papale, while Greg Kinnear portrays Vermeil. Filming began July 2005, with first-time director Ericson Core (whose cinematography credits include Daredevil and The Fast and the Furious) in the helm. The movie, which co-stars Elizabeth Banks, Michael Rispoli, and Kevin Conway, is scheduled to close out the summer box office season.
Coming to Theaters August 25, 2006 / Rated PG /

THE SANTA CLAUSE 3: THE ESCAPE CLAUSE

Tim Allen returns as Scott Calvin a.k.a. Santa Claus for a follow-up to the two popular holiday comedies. This time, he struggles to keep his family happy while battling Jack Frost (Martin Short, Allen's Jungle 2 Jungle co-star), who is plotting to take over Christmas. Scott's family gets larger, as he meets his critical in-laws (Ann-Margret and Alan Arkin, joining the cast) and learns that the new Mrs. Claus (Elizabeth Mitchell) is expecting a baby.

Production on this live action sequel began mid-November 2005 with Michael Lembeck directing from a screenplay by Ed Decter and John Strauss, all returning from The Santa Clause 2. Most of the previous sequel's cast is also back, including Wendy Crewson (Scott's ex-wife Laura Miller), Judge Reinhold (her husband Neil), Eric Lloyd (Scott's son Charlie), Spencer Breslin (now head elf Curtis), and Liliana Mumy (Scott's niece Lucy). Unfortunately, David Krumholtz, who previously charmed in the first two movies as somewhat cranky head elf Bernard, will not be reappearing.
In Theaters November 3, 2006 /

Bridge to Terabithia - Disney and Walden are teaming up yet again to bring a popular and acclaimed piece of literature to the big screen, something they've already done for Holes, Around the World in 80 Days, and The Chronicles of Narnia. Terabithia, adapted from Katherine Paterson's Newberry Medal-winning 1977 children's novel of the same name, will share Narnia's filming location; production began in New Zealand in February 2006 and wrapped in just under three months. The film tells the story of a schoolboy (Josh Hutcherson, Zathura, Kicking & Screaming) who befriends the class outsider (AnnaSophia Robb, Because of Winn-Dixie and Violet in Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory). Together, the two 11-year-olds create Terabithia, an imaginary kingdom filled with giants, trolls, and other magical beings. Gabor Csupo, a veteran of TV animation (he created Nickelodeon's "Rugrats" and "The Wild Thornberrys" and has long been involved with "The Simpsons" as producer and animator), is making his directorial debut here with a screenplay by David Paterson (no relation to the author). Holding the two adult lead roles are Zooey Deschanel (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Once Upon a Mattress) and Robert Patrick (Ladder 49) as Miss Edmunds and Mr. Aarons, respectively. The text was previously adapted on a smaller scale in 1985. Disney is aiming to release the film on February 16th, 2007.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (a.k.a. Pirates of the Caribbean 3) - Like the Back to the Future and Matrix sequels, the second and third installments of the Pirates of the Caribbean saga have been shot back-to-back. Filming on part two, Dead Man's Chest, ended in June 2005, and when production resumed in mid-August, the focus turned to this sequel with the same cast and crew, including stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightley, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, and writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio. The Rolling Stones rocker Keith Richards, rumored to show up in Dead Man's Chest, actually will appear in this movie, playing Captain Jack Sparrow's father, whose fashion style has clearly been passed on to his son. With all island footage filmed, the production is currently on hiatus until August 2006. Unlike the two films which precede this adventure which opened in early July, this final installment has been scheduled for a Memorial Day release on May 25th, 2007.

Underdog - A diminutive hound named Shoeshine accidentally acquires superpowers during a lab mishap. A lonely twelve-year-old boy adopts Shoeshine, and the two form a strong friendship based on the secret they share; the little dog is actually a the superhero Underdog. Underdog's nemesis is the mad scientist Simon Barsinister who must be overcome if Capitol City will be saved. The caped canine with a flair for rhyming couplets is best known as the star of NBC's tongue-in-cheek cartoon, which ran from 1964 to 1973. Disney and Spyglass Entertainment are adapting the source for live action big screen treatment, working from a script by Joe Piscatella and Craig A. Williams. Underdog will be played by a real dog with CGI enhancements and if all goes well, Walt Disney Pictures is hoping for a franchise. This potentially first film began production March 2006 in Rhode Island and is shooting for release on August 3rd, 2007.

Enchanted - In this part-animated, part-live-action romantic fable, a wannabe princess named Giselle is banished by an evil queen from the cartoon world to present day New York. There, she must rescue herself and find true love. This project has undergone many rewrites over the past eight years but is currently shooting with Disney veteran Kevin Lima in the helm. Lima is no stranger to either medium; he began his career working on story for Oliver & Company and Aladdin, moved onto directing "Goof Troop", its big screen spin-off A Goofy Movie, and Tarzan, and most recently has been in the director's chair for live action fare including 102 Dalmatians and the two Eloise TV movies. Enchanted's cast includes Amy Adams as Princess Giselle, Susan Sarandon as the wicked Queen Narissa, James Marsden as the Prince, and Broadway actress Idina Menzel. Former '80s icon and current "Grey's Anatomy" star Patrick Dempsey plays a single father (love interest, anyone?) who helps Giselle find her way around New York. The script in use is credited to Bill Kelly, who wrote the well-received 1999 romantic comedy Blast From the Past. While originally announced as being part CG-animation, it was later determined that 2-D animation would be employed for the fairy tale world scenes. This, coupled with the fact that the film is intended to feature six songs written by Stephen Schwartz (Pocahontas) and composed by Alan Menken (Aladdin, The Little Mermaid), may rightfully lead many to consider this a callback of sorts to Disney's animation renaissance of the late '80s/early '90s. Filming began in New York in April 2006, with November 2nd, 2007 being a targeted theatrical release.

Swiss Family Robinson (remake) - Mandeville Films had hoped to start shooting this new adaptation of Johann Wyss's classic book sometime early in 2006, months after wrapping production on The Shaggy Dog remake. Then, hired director Jonathan Mostow (Terminator 3, U-571) pushed things back for Tonight, He Comes, a superhero mid-life crisis movie starring Will Smith. Mostow has since left that Sony project, giving Swiss the go-ahead to proceed. While attempts were made to modernize the story (perhaps like the Wonderful World of Disney's 1998 telemovie Beverly Hills Family Robinson?), the script by Greg Poirier ultimately kept the 19th century period setting as it was employed for Disney's popular 1960 filming of the same text. Mostow is also to rework Poirier's script with writing partner Sam Montgomery. No confirmed casting has been announced, but news in July 2005 stated that Lindsay Lohan was reportedly in talks to unite with Disney (for a sixth time) and presumably play "Bertie", the cute castaway who catches the eyes of two Robinson brothers. A release date has yet to be set, but filming is scheduled to begin fall 2006 and the movie could possibly be a major Christmas opening the way the original film was in 1960.

National Treasure 2 - Even with the mostly golden track record of producer Jerry Bruckheimer (who had thrice topped the $100 million mark for Disney branches with Nicolas Cage in a leading role), nobody quite expected National Treasure to perform as well with audiences as it did. Feeling more like Bruckheimer's Touchstone fare than the Walt Disney Pictures label it was moved to at the last moment, the PG-rated action flick narrowly claimed the #1 box office spot in November 2004 and held onto it for three straight weeks. It would end up with $173 million domestically and a tiny bit more overseas, easily making it one of the year's top-grossers. Despite an alternate ending that was dropped because it suggested a sequel, that's exactly what the producer intends to make once filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (the third and, for the moment, final chapter in that even more profitable Disney/Bruckheimer franchise) wraps up this fall. Director Jon Turtletaub and star Nicolas Cage are expected to return, as are supporting cast members Justin Bartha, Harvey Keitel, Jon Voight, and Diane Kruger, while Greg Poirier (the forthcoming Swiss Family Robinson remake discussed directly above) is currently credited with the screenplay, though others may still have a hand in it (the first film gave writing credits to five individuals). Thus far, plot particulars remain guarded, but one assumes viewers can expect to see some more treasure hunting. Production is supposed to begin early January 2007.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - It's not surprising that along with Walden Media, Disney would want to pursue adapting the other books in C.S. Lewis's best-selling fantasy series, after The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe became the second highest grossing film of 2005, the third highest grossing live action film domestically in Disney's history (behind Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Hollywood Pictures' The Sixth Sense) and the company's all-time #1 live action film worldwide. Caspian catches up with the four Pevensie children, who return to Narnia to find that one thousand years have passed since they left. They are again enlisted to join the magical world's colorful creatures in an effort to combat an evil villain preventing the rightful prince from ruling. On Groundhog Day 2006, Disney and Walden officially announced the commencement of preproduction on this sequel. Wardrobe's director Andrew Adamson and most of its principal cast will return for this follow-up. The studios are reportedly contemplating filming in Ireland. Originally planned for release on December 14, 2007, Caspian is now scheduled to reach theaters sometime in the summer of 2008.

Jungle Cruise - On the heels of big screen adventures Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion comes this latest film inspired by a Disneyland attraction. Described as a family version of Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, this comedy/adventure will follow a group which travels upriver to find a cure. The screenplay was written by Josh Goldstein and John Norville (Tin Cup), and this one is also a Disney/Mandeville production. Originally slated to start early in 2006, this has since been delayed with 2007 release now looking unlikely.

Kiki's Delivery Service - A live action English language adaptation of Eiko Kadani's book series, which was previously brought to the screen in Hayao Miyazaki's popular late-'80s anime film of the same name. Jeff Stockwell (The Dangerous Lives of Altar Boys) is writing a screenplay.

The Banshee and Fin Magee (Originally titled The Banshee) - Dean DeBlois, co-writer and co-director of Lilo & Stitch, tries his hand at live action with this period ghost story set in Ireland. In writer/director/producer DeBlois's own words, "It's the story of a little boy who is ignored by the world and pretends to be a ghost, who (then) comes into contact with a real ghost." DeBlois claims this "story of friendship, love and loss" is aimed at the Harry Potter audience; he hopes older kids will enjoy this supernatural mystery. Production was supposed to begin spring 2005, but as of now, nothing has been shot and there is no firm release date yet set. In February 2006, it was reported that Robert Nelson Jacobs has been hired to rewrite DeBlois' script. Jacobs was Oscar-nominated for his Chocolat screenplay, but got fewer raves for his work on Dinosaur, Out to Sea, and The Shipping News.
